FDA Questioning Natural Food Claims

The Boomer Generation Diet by Bill RothFinally, the FDA is opening a review on the use of the word “natural” in food advertising and claims. This review comes as a result of citizen petitions questioning the meaning of the word and even its use in food labeling. The questions the agency will specifically investigate include:

  • Is it appropriate to define the word natural
  • How should the word natural be defined
  • How should the word be used in food advertising?

Keys to buying good for you foods that taste good!

By now most of us know that the use of the word natural in food advertising and labeling is a throw away word. Buying foods labeled as “natural” is a major reason why dieting does not work. We think we are buying good for us foods to improve our health and lose weight but instead we eat foods corrupted with unsustainable levels of sugar, fat, salts and chemicals.

Until we have truth in food claims and advertising we need a set of criteria for avoiding food porn around “natural” food claims. These are the three food selection criteria in my new book, The Boomer Generation Diet, that I have successfully used to lose 30 pounds and keep them off:

  • Simple ingredients
  • Local
  • Use of organic or sustainable food production practices.

Simple Food

It is this simple, if a food has an ingredient you do not recognize, understand or can spell then do not buy it or eat it. Research is now emerging that the chemicals in our food are impacting our weight and health. A food is not natural if it has chemicals inserted in it.

Local

Local foods just taste better. Fresh does make a difference. This is my secret sauce for finding foods that are good for me and that taste good.

Another key points is that when we buy convenience we are eating chemicals. The average distance the food you buy at fast food restaurants or inside the center isle of the grocery store travels 1,500 miles. Chemical preservatives are the way food manufacturers enables food to sustain this scale of travel. It might look fresh but it is not natural…it is artificial based on chemicals.

Sustainably sourced food

This best practice takes a little more work to figure out. But it is worth the effort. Good for you food is produced through the use of sustainable agricultural. Organic is the most authentic of these types of foods because chemicals are not used in their production or injected into them to artificially make them look fresh. Look for foods that are certified as sustainably produced or organic. Visit local markets and ask questions. This is a great way to find new foods that taste great and that support healthy living. This is how I found the guacamole made with fresh ingredients with no chemicals additives that I use on my salads rather than salad dressing.

Food trust is key to dieting that works

Eating food that you can trust is key to achieving sustained weight loss and a healthier lifestyle. This might seem extreme but I now avoid foods labeled “natural.” That word is so corrupted it means nothing to me in terms of eating good for me foods. When I began to focus my diet on eating simple, local and sustainably sourced foods I began to lose weight and feel better.
